Firmitude was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that every woman who wants to play football should feel welcome on the pitch.
The idea grew from years of watching the women’s game evolve. Seventeen years ago, grassroots football for women was under-resourced and often overlooked. Jumpers marked goalposts, kits were borrowed, and opportunities were limited. Even as the sport began to grow in visibility and the Lionesses inspired a new generation, one question remained for many women locally: how can I get involved in football?
Through involvement with local competitive clubs, it became clear that while standards were rising and pathways were strengthening, beginners and returning players were increasingly being left behind.
Sessions became faster and more performance-focused, and for some women, simply turning up felt intimidating.

Not to compete with established clubs, but to offer something different: a welcoming, supportive space where confidence could grow before competition ever became a consideration.
The first session in 2017 welcomed just one woman. The following week, three attended. What began as a weekly kickabout slowly developed into a thriving community. Nearly half of those early members remain involved today, drawn not by league tables or trophies, but by the sense of belonging they found.
Over time, sessions expanded, new members joined, and the community evolved.
At Firmitude, we chose to keep that simplicity at heart.
Today, the charity supports a diverse community of women of all ages and backgrounds, from complete beginners to those rediscovering a love for the sport. Now a registered, volunteer-led organisation, Firmitude continues to stand for stable strength, quiet confidence and a community where women lift each other up.
It began with a single session in the park. It continues every time a woman steps onto the pitch and realises she belongs there.
